So I've been meaning to write this one for some time now, but I didn't have enough time to write to do it justice. But, finally, here it is...
I know that if you've been following me, you'll know how much I enjoy Taylor Swift's music and lyrics. She's an amazing singer/songwriter.
On her album "Speak Now", Taylor has a song called "Mean" and it just made my feelings about her and her music more concrete.
Not many people that met me after I got to college would know it, but I was a kid that was bullied and beaten up. I got into numerous fights through middle school and the verbal abuse didn't get any better in high school.
I say that to say that having someone like Taylor Swift, who is a role model to so many young girls, and guys, too, stand against bullying on a level such as a popular song that is heard around the world, well it's kind of aw-inspiring and down-right genius.
There have been others who have spoken out through song about how you should feel good about yourself. Christina Aguilera and PINK have also been known to sing about being true to yourself and knowing that you're beautiful.
Taylor has also written other songs like "Stay Beautiful" and "Tied Together With a Smile" and others about being beautiful and knowing that.
But, she has brought this song, "Mean", into a world where people seem to need to put others down to make themselves feel better. I just don't know any way to describe her except to say that she is one of the best role models any young person could have.

You, with your words like knives and swords and weapons that you use against me
You have knocked me off my feet again got me feeling like I'm nothing
You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard, calling me out when I'm wounded
You, pickin' on the weaker man
Well, you can take me down with just one single blow
But you don't know what you don't know
Someday I'll be living in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?
You, with your switching sides and your wildfire lies and your humiliation
You, have pointed out my flaws again as if I don't already see them
I'll walk with my head down trying to block you out 'cause I'll never impress you
I just wanna feel okay again
I'll bet you got pushed around, somebody made you cold
But the cycle ends right now 'cause you can't lead me down that road
And you don't know what you don't know
Someday I'll be living in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?
And I can see you years from now in a bar, talking over a football game
With that same big loud opinion but nobody's listening
Washed up and ranting about the same old bitter things
Drunk and grumbling on about how I can't sing
But all you are is mean
All you are is mean and a liar and pathetic and alone in life
And mean, and mean, and mean, and mean
But someday I'll be living in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean, yeah
Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?
Someday, I'll be, living in a big old city
(Why you gotta be so mean?)
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
(Why you gotta be so mean?)
Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
(Why you gotta be so mean?)
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Why you gotta be so mean?
