Remembering... Sometimes a Photograph is all you need

Today, I lost my grandmother. And while I have been going through the week prior to this, I have been listening to Ed Sheeran's "X" on repeat.

You may think, "Oh she's going to make a reference to "Even My Dad Does Sometimes," or possibly "I'm a Mess." While both songs have perfectly good lyrics and music to identify what I'm feeling, my mind went in a different direction.

It has been one of my favorite songs on the album since I first got it, but I always thought of it in the normal boy-girl relationship kind of way. But this morning, shortly before I was made aware of what happened, I heard something different in the words.

It's weird to think that at different times in your life you can hear the same words and feel completely different about what they mean to you and your situation.

I heard my current situation in these words:

"We keep this love in a photograph,
We made these memories for ourselves,
Where our eyes are never closing,
Our hearts were never broken,
And time's forever frozen, still."

But then I really heard it the last chorus, where the second half is added on.

"Oh you can fit me,
Inside the necklace you bought when you were sixteen,
Next to your heartbeat where I should be,
Keep it deep within your soul..."

When I turned 21, my aunt gave me a ring that her mother gave her when she was 21. I wear that ring as a necklace practically everyday. This lyric never really hit me like that until yesterday morning. And I felt a rush of hurt and longing as I listened to this song in a whole new way.

I cannot explain to you just how hard it was for me to hear that she was gone, but Sheeran's words say it all:

"And I won’t ever let you go,
Wait for me to come home"

Just read the lyrics and listen to the song. You'll be glad you did.

Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes
But it's the only thing that I know
When it gets hard, you know it can get hard sometimes
It's the only thing that makes us feel alive

We keep this love in a photograph
We made these memories for ourselves
Where our eyes are never closing
Our hearts were never broken
And time's forever frozen, still

So you can keep me
Inside the pocket of your ripped jeans
Holding me close until our eyes meet
You won't ever be alone, wait for me to come home

Loving can heal, loving can mend your soul
And it's the only thing that I know
I swear it will get easier, remember that with every piece of ya
And it's the only thing to take with us when we die

We keep this love in a photograph
We made these memories for ourselves
Where our eyes are never closing
Our hearts were never broken
And time's forever frozen, still

So you can keep me
Inside the pocket of your ripped jeans
Holding me close until our eyes meet
You won't ever be alone
And if you hurt me
That's okay baby, only words bleed
Inside these pages you just hold me
And I won’t ever let you go
Wait for me to come home
Wait for me to come home
Wait for me to come home
Wait for me to come home

Oh you can fit me
Inside the necklace you bought when you were sixteen
Next to your heartbeat where I should be
Keep it deep within your soul
And if you hurt me
That's okay baby, only words bleed
Inside these pages you just hold me
And I won’t ever let you go

When I'm away, I will remember how you kissed me
Under the lamppost back on Sixth street
Hearing you whisper through the phone
Wait for me to come home
